James Whte and the term ‘Sex Slave’

Rebuking James White again

To this day I am yet to find a consistent Christian apologist on the net. James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries uses the term ‘sex slaves’ when talking about concubines with regards to Islam however, one wonders if he would use the same term (‘sex slave’) when discussing concubines in the Bible, yes they are in the Bible!

A couple of other points to come out of this video is that of White’s desperation to appear knowledgeable in Islamic studies. James White’s desperation just makes him look silly in front of those who actually know what they are talking about. James White makes a couple of bizarre claims which points to his lack of knowledge in Hadith and Islamic studies; White confuses marriage dowry with something that ISIS were allegedly doing and seems to not even know that slavery is not an order in Sharia.

Oh and another thing that came out in the wash, White admits he has not even read the Hadith, yet to a different audience he was bragging about ‘reading’ the Hadith literature. Pride comes before a fall.

Watch James make Christian apologetics  lack humility, consistency and scholarship (AGAIN)

Here’s an email I received from somebody who was not impressed with James White’s unscholarly antics (touched on in the video)

As-salaamu `alaikum,

I hope you are having a blessed month of Ramadan.

I am just writing to you because I was listening to James White on the Dividing Line today, and heard him make a very strange statement about a hadith. I know you have written about him a few times on your site, so I thought you might be interested.

On his most recent Dividing Line (23rd of June 2015), White talks about ISIS offering slave girls as a prize for memorizing the Qur’an. He then bizarrely tries to make a parallel with something the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did in a hadith he claims is found ‘dozens of times’ (later he says between 35 and 45 times, without exaggeration) in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. The whole clip is between the 37 to 40th minute mark, and here are two of the things White says:
“I know there is one hadith. It’s repeated dozens of times between Bukahri and Muslim. I’m not sure if it’s in Abu Dawood and so on and so forth, but it’s in both Bukhari and Muslim, where Muhammad gave a woman to a man – now, she had offered herself to Muhammad [and] he had refused – but he gave her in marriage to a very poor man in return for… memorisation of the Qur’an!” 38:18-38:48

“You have precedent in the hadith for the giving of a woman in marriage, by Muhammad, based upon memorization of a portion of the Qur’an.” 39:38-39:50

Note the hilarious way in which he tries to give himself credibility with his audience by randomly mentioning Abu Dawood, as he so often does. Anyway, this imbecile clearly can’t understand the difference between arranging a marriage for a dowry that was to be given to the woman (i.e. teaching her some Qur’an), and ‘been given’ a woman as a prize for memorizing a portion of the Qur’an.

At some point, he also claims that he heard the hadith (he listens to hadiths on his bike), without exaggeration, minimally 35 to 40 times. I did a check in Bukhari and Muslim, and I could only find the following instances. There may be others than I missed, so it would be worth double-checking, but I doubt it’s anywhere near the number he gives.

Sahih Bukhari

Volume 7, Book 62, Number 24:
Narrated Sahl bin Sad As-Sa’idi:

A woman came to Allah’s Apostle and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! I have come to give you myself in marriage (without Mahr).” Allah’s Apostle looked at her. He looked at her carefully and fixed his glance on her and then lowered his head. When the lady saw that he did not say anything, she sat down. A man from his companions got up and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! If you are not in need of her, then marry her to me.” The Prophet said, “Have you got anything to offer?” The man said, “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Apostle!” The Prophet said (to him), “Go to your family and see if you have something.” The man went and returned, saying, “No, by Allah, I have not found anything.” Allah’s Apostle said, “(Go again) and look for something, even if it is an iron ring.” He went again and returned, saying, “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Apostle! I could not find even an iron ring, but this is my Izar (waist sheet).” He had no rida. He added, “I give half of it to her.” Allah’s Apostle said, “What will she do with your Izar? If you wear it, she will be naked, and if she wears it, you will be naked.” So that man sat down for a long while and then got up (to depart). When Allah’s Apostle saw him going, he ordered that he be called back. When he came, the Prophet said, “How much of the Quran do you know?” He said, “I know such Sura and such Sura,” counting them. The Prophet said, “Do you know them by heart?” He replied, “Yes.” The Prophet said, “Go, I marry her to you for that much of the Quran which you have.”

Volume 7, Book 62, Number 54:
Narrated Sahl bin Sad:

A woman presented herself to the Prophet (for marriage). A man said to him, “O Allah’s Apostle! (If you are not in need of her) marry her to me.” The Prophet said, “What have you got?” The man said, “I have nothing.” The Prophet said (to him), “Go and search for something) even if it were an iron ring.” The man went and returned saying, “No, I have not found anything, not even an iron ring; but this is my (Izar) waist sheet, and half of it is for her.” He had no Rida’ (upper garment). The Prophet said, “What will she do with your waist sheet? If you wear it, she will have nothing over her; and if she wears it, you will have nothing over you.” So the man sat down and when he had sat a long time, he got up (to leave). When the Prophet saw him (leaving), he called him back, or the man was called (for him), and he said to the man, “How much of the Quran do you know (by heart)?” The man replied I know such Sura and such Sura (by heart),” naming the Suras The Prophet said, “I have married her to you for what you know of the Quran “

Volume 7, Book 62, Number 58:

He looked at her carefully and fixed his glance on her and then lowered his head. When the lady saw that he did not say anything, she sat down. A man from his companions got up and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! If you are not in need of her, then marry her to me.” The Prophet said, “Have you got anything to offer.” The man said, ‘No, by Allah, O Allah’s Apostle!” The Prophet said (to him), “Go to your family and try to find something.” So the man went and returned, saying, “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Apostle! I have not found anything.” The Prophet said, “Go again and look for something, even if it were an iron ring.” He went and returned, saying, “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Apostle! I could not find even an iron ring, but this is my Izar (waist sheet).’ He had no Rida (upper garment). He added, “I give half of it to her.” Allah’s Apostle said “What will she do with your Izar? If you wear it, she will have nothing over herself thereof (will be naked); and if she wears it, then you will have nothing over yourself thereof ‘ So the man sat for a long period and then got up (to leave). When Allah’s Apostle saw him leaving, he ordered that he e called back. When he came, the Prophet asked (him), “How much of the Qur’an do you know (by heart)?” The man replied, I know such Sura and such Sura and such Sura,” naming the suras. The Prophet said, “Can you recite it by heart?” He said, ‘Yes.” The Prophet said, “Go I let you marry her for what you know of the Quran (as her Mahr).

She again stood up for the third time and said, “She has given herself in marriage to you: so give your opinion of her.” So a man stood up and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Sahih Muslim

Book 8, Hadith 3316
Sahl b. Sa’d al-Sa’idi (Allah be pleased with him) reported:

A woman came to Allah’s Messenger and said: Messenger of Allah, I have come to you to entrust myself to you (you may contract my marriage with anyone at your discretion). Allah’s Messenger saw her and cast a glance at her from head to foot. Allah’s Messenger then lowered his head. When the woman saw that he had made no decision in regard to her, she sat down. There stood up a person from amongst his companions and said: Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need of her. He (the Prophet) said: is there anything with you (which you con give as a dower)? He said: No, Messenger of Allah, by Allah I have nothing. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger said: Go to your people (family) and see if you can find something. He returned and said: I have found nothing. The Messenger of Allah said: See even if it is an iron ring. He went and returned and said: No, by Allah, not even an iron ring, but only this lower garment of mine (Sahl said that he had no upper garment), half of which (I am prepared to part with) for her. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger said: How can your lower garment serve your purpose, for it you wear it, she would not be able to make any use of it and if she wears it there would not be anything on you? The man sat down and as the sitting prolonged he stood up (in disappointment) and as he was going back Allah’s Messenger commanded (him) to be called back, and as he came, he said to him: Do you know any part of the Qur’an? He said: I know such and such surahs (and he counted them), whereupon he said: Can you recite them from heart (from your memory)? He said: Yes, whereupon he (Allah’s Messenger) said: Go, I have given her to you in marriage for the part of the Qur’an which you know.

Book 8, Hadith 3317

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Sahl b. Sa’d with a minor alteration of words, but the hadith transmitted through Za’idah (the words are that the Holy Prophet) said:
Go, I have married her to you, and you teach her something of the Qur’an.

Now, I know that he will try to divert attention from this by saying that the point is the slavery issue, and that’s in the sunnah, etc. However, even there he doesn’t know what he is talking about, because he claims that being able to have sex with slave girls is in the Shari`ah, but one of the foundations of Shari`ah is `ijma, and slavery has been abolished according to the consensus of scholars (as I understand it anyway). Perhaps other responses could be given to this as well.

The main point however, is if he can so completely misunderstand the meaning of a hadith (perhaps due to his lack of knowledge of things like mahr), then how can he be trusted as any kind of ‘expert’ on Islam?

Anyway, I just thought this might be of interest to you, in case you hadn’t already caught it.

Salaam
